Research Area: Privacy in Data Management

Understanding the impact of data management techniques on basic user privacy has become of increasing interest to the data management and online user communities. Work in the field of data privacy has been concerned with a subclass of relevant problems, but do not take a generic, definitional approach.

Legal and social definitions of privacy centre upon the relationship between data collectors and data providers. It is in this context which we have focused our work, defining privacy in terms of ontological, semantic, and syntactic approaches. Our work over the last several years has moved from building models of privacy, to capturing the definitions required by the legal framework and organizational policies which currently enforce privacy, to beginning to implement privacy preservation in a modern data management system.
